3/5/2007 Last few weeks of the seasonAt last a run down of the last couple of weeks of last season now that the website is working again. Time June 2006, Place Carstairs Village, occasion, Monteith in pursuit of the lanarklshire League Division 1B title and promotion to the Premier League.
Only 4 games to go and need to win 2 of them.
Saturday 03/06/06 now everybody else has stopped playing and they are all waiting on us slipping up. CDC visit Monteith in the league with a 5-1 away win under their belt in the first game of the season Monteith are confident of victory but perhaps too confident. Monteith fall behind early on and despite getting back on level terms they lose two goals from set pieces late on to see them slip to their first home league defeat of the season at "Fortress Monteith" a defeat that leaves us up against it for the League run in. Only bright spot was a Gordon Adam goal to make it 1-1 but despite this ended up on wrong end of a 3-1 scoreline.
Monday 05/06/06
Again one of the few games taking place and while not convincing in a home match against Scotia Athletic got a good 4-0 win with a double from Geordie McNab and a single each from Chuts and Wrighty. Now need to win one from last 3 matches, surely not too big a challenge is it?????
Saturday 10/06/06
Home again to Caldercruix this time and after having let slip a 2 goal lead in the last match against them to end at 4-4 the nerves are showing for this one. Monteith strted well but lost a goal against the run of play and then another to give Caldercruix a 2-0 lead, did get a goal back but it proved too little too late and in fact Caldercruix rounded of the scoring with a 3rd goal to give Monteith their second 3-1 home defeat on consecutive Saturdays, not just a mountain to climb now it more like Everest. PS Craigie Martin threw a wee wobbler after the match. Only bright spot Geordies 60TH goal of the season.
Monday 12/06/06
Down to the wire as they say, now have to win 1 of the last 2 matches both against "mental" Forgewood, this the first of them to be played on a shitty ash park at Motherwell, Oh well nobody said it would be easy. Played absolutely rubbish but looked as if we would snatch a draw but with only 4 minutes left a long ball was not dealt with by the defence and it struck a Forgewood player before ending in the back of the net for 1-0 to Forgewood much to the delight of the Carfin Harp gang who now saw a distinct possibilty of snatching the league from Monteith without kicking a ball. Only bright spot, this time it was Wrighty's turn to spit the dummy.
Now we have to wait the outcome of league inquiry in to our abandoned match V Forgewood earlier in the season to set a date for what has now become a must win match for Monteith, and just to help our cause the Cooncil say there is no chance it will be played at Monteith even if we are allowed to by the League.
The decision is in the match must now be played at a neutral venue, Eddlewood, on Monday 26/06/06, everybody is now looking forward to their hols not football but Ce Sera Sera.
Monday 26/06/06
Ah well off to the sunny climes of Eddlewood by the bing on a Monday night, dont know about setting the heather on fire but the locals were certainly setting the loose grass round the park on fire. As one bystander noted "Monteith" must have been empty that night as we took a big support to the match but unfortunately Bonny could not make it buit he was kept informed by phone of the nights proceedings.
Quite a few players were missing for such an important match notably the "Flying Pig" that is Sieb in goal but Young Stoddart proved an able stand in.
Despite an early scre when Graham Stoddart had to tip an effort over the bar Monteith did settle and took the lead in the 4th min with a Chutney strike then they threatened to increase this lead but ultimately did not and in fact young Stoddart had to make another couple of saves to keep the lead intact.
In to the second half and the nerves were settled a bit when Geordie set Chuts free and it was 2-0 after 55 mins then on the hour a bullet header from Geordie (61 for the season) made it 3-0, the finishing line was now in sight and they eventually crossed it when Alky and Wrighty combined to set up Chuts for his hat-trick to make it 4-0. we did lose a goal in the 75th min and another in stoppage time to make the final score 4-2 but it was jnot enough to prevent it being party time for Monteith after so many dissapointments.
Premier League Here We Come
2/8/2007 Apology for the abscence of any InfoSorry to all (if any) who have logged on only to find no entries from the end of May until now, will try to make amends with as much update as I can remeber and get a start made on this season. There is a statistics website set up for this season but as yet no match reports on it this can be found by going on to Teamstats website and accessing Monteith AFC from there. 5/31/2006 Two wins two totally different performances.Monday 29/05/06 Monteithy AFC 2 V 0 Larkhall Victory.//
Did enough to win this match the crabbit way playing at times against nine men. Took the lead in the 15th min when wee Dougie played in a free kick which the keeper could not hold and the ball spilled to the handily placed
Big Jim McSkimm who rattled it home from 3foot 6 inches for 1-0 to ma team. Almost doubled the lead when a Chuts free kick found Wrighty but his header was tipped over for a corner. Finally got a second goal when another free kick was played in on the keeper and after a STRAMASH with the ball being cleared off the line it fell to Chuts who stroked it home in to the corner for 2-0 at half time. Second half was all one way traffic but despite making a few chances we could not get more goals, but THREE POINTS nonetheless.

MIGHTY MONTEITH 5 V 1 Top of the League Blantyre Thistle
What a display full of power and composure after a stupid giveaway opener for Blantyre when Kaiser Wull sold Sieb short to put them 1-0 up after 11 mins, but it was all square a couple of minutes later when a free kick was played in and not cleared with the ball landing at the feet of Geordie who stabbed home for 1-1. Chutney should have put us in front when he beat the offside trap then after beating the keeper he actually passed the ball in the box to the amazement of everyone present but the pass was forward and despite us "scoring" it was chalked off. Geordie had another chance in the 32st min when a pass back found him but he had more time with the header than he thought and put it over the bar. Half time 1-1.
Started the second half on fire down the left with Wee Dougie feeding Chuts who put the ball in to Geordie but his header was well saved. 49 mins won a corner which Craigie flashed in and Big Arse put in an unstoppable header which almost burst the net for 2-1 to us much to the delight of the home crowd. Continued to press with Bobby Stark on the right crossing to Geordie but his header was just past then Gogs had a chance go astray as well. Increased the lead in the 65th min when good work from Big Arse and Crigie combined to set up Geordie to help settle the nerves when he made it 3-1. Controlled the match after this and they lost the plot, Craigie had a shot well saved in the 83rd min before we sealed the match with a great goal in the 87th min when Gogs went down the right and crossed for Geordie to head home our fourth and his hat-trick, then the goal of the night came in the 89th min when good work from young Big Arse set up Geordie and after drifting past three defenders he slotted home his 4th nad our 5th of the night to wrap up an excellent victory against the league leaders.
Come on The Teith
5/28/2006 Carstairs United Take overCarstairs United on the brink of sell off
As I sit here typing the negotiations for the take over of Carstairs United AFC are at an advanced stage with only the depositing of a large sum in an off shore bank account holding up the deal. It looks as if there will be a player revolution after the combined retirement of James McIlvaney and Craig Martin, one through age and one because of work committments, but I will let you work out which was which for yourself.
The combined efforts of Brian Gray, Jim McSkimming and John Frood are the brains behind the take over so all the best boys, still to have a Carstairs input in the Carluke and District AFL will be a great achievement after the late season dissapointment just past and perhaps it was time for fresh faces.
The AGM for the Carluke and District AFL will be on Monday 5th June and this should see the new set up ratified. how to do things the blledin hard way entry 62Hannigan Trophy Final
Monteith AFC 2 V Scotia Athletic 1 (AET)
Now after a hrd week having played 4 games in 6 days and on to your 5th in eight days what is the last thing you want? thats right extra time, but oh no we have to have extra time it would be too easy doing it the other way. we should probably have won the match in normal time with a few chances coming our way the best falling to Jamie Stark but his header went over the bar, then Geordie had the ball in the net but it was ruled out by the Scotia supporting Linesman, we thought for hand ball as Geordie had admitted to that but no it was for offside despite at least one defender being on the line but it was just par for the course after some of his earlier decisions. On to extra time and we got the wind behind us again and with the half drawing to a close wee Chuts was set free on the right and as he cut in he struck a great shot on goal it did take a bit of a deflection(not according to him right enough) but still nestled in the net for 1-0. With our next attack Big Jim McSkim set Geordie a chase and he outpaced the centre half before putting a superb chip over the head of wee kenny in the Scotia goal for 2-0 to the Teith. The second half saw big Erchie give a penalty against us for something that only he saw in the box and this was duly despatched by Scotia to start a firework party in the stand(brave folk the Sctia mob juggling and heading rockets and all sorts as they spilled out) but it was too little too late for them and we went on to lift our second Trophy in just over a week but the big bonus is a weekend off. how to do things the bleedin hard way entry 61Of to wet and wild Cumbernauld for this league match, dont know what it was like to play in but it was piss poor to watch. Looked as if we were down and out after Gogs had given the ball away to set them 1-0 up early in the second half and looked as if the tank was empty but Wee Craigie set Wrighty free on the right with a free kick and bang there it is across the keeper for 1-1 in the 80th min, would just about have settled for that but kept plugging away and when a perfectly flighted corner was put in by Ian Miller that man Wright was on hand to head home and give us the lead at 2-1 with 5 mins to go. we tried hard to let them in for a goal giving away a free kick in the last min that went just past but lo and behold we held on to keep the title tilt on track. 5/23/2006 How to do things the bleedin hard way entry 60Off to Sunny Forgewood for the Hannigan Semi-final we thought, but no it was changed to the more cellubrious surroundings of Motherwell Miners Park so only 100 buckie filled loonies shouting at us. Baldy loony wisny playing at the back but wis there stirring it up so the right decision was made leaving wee Craigie at Carnwath. Started poorly with Bobby Stark being found lacking in height by about 6 inches early on and went 1-0 down but the big arsed one should have scored a couple of minutes later but tried to play it off the bar and in but it went over with the goals agaping. eventually got level when big arse set up Geordie Wis he off side? for 1-1. then tried to commit hari kari with clearances off the line and Sieb saves keeping us level. took the lead when Chuts put in a great corner for big arse to head home his third goal in as many matches for 2-1.
Let them back in to it in the second half and back to clearing off the line wi Jaimbo Robertson being in the right place this tiime. Should have had it wrapped up and tied in a bow in 75 mins when Chuts plyed in Geordie from a throw and a grwat cross found Wrighty at the back post to bullet home for 3-1, but how to do things the hard way kicks in again, gave them a goal in the 89th min when Chuts gave the ball away and a shot was placed past Sieb then it was a cavalry charge right to the end as Sammy saw fit to add on another 5 mins of stoppage time but we held out and go to Loch Park Carluke for the final on Friday night. Nice laddies them from Forgewood though they kick you, bight yoy swear at you and punch you through the match them come and wish you all the best in the final, sweet eh!. |
